Sustainable Mylar Packaging: Recyclable and Mono-Material Options
Flexible packaging uses far less material than rigid bottles and jars, but the classic multi-layer laminate is hard to recycle because it mixes materials. The good news: greener options exist and are improving fast. Here’s an honest look at what’s realistic today.
Mono-material recyclable films
The biggest shift is toward mono-material structures — pouches built primarily from a single polymer family (often all-PE) so they can enter store drop-off recycling streams. Barrier is achieved with coatings rather than a foil layer. Barrier performance is slightly below full foil but strong enough for many dry goods.
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) content
Some films now incorporate PCR content, reducing virgin plastic use. It’s a straightforward way to lower footprint without changing how the bag runs or looks.
The barrier trade-off
The honest tension is that the highest-barrier structures (full foil) are the hardest to recycle, while the most recyclable structures offer slightly less barrier. For coffee and highly oxygen-sensitive goods you may still need foil; for many snacks, dry mixes, and pet treats, a recyclable mono-material film performs well.
